I totally agree, but here’s some perhaps counterintuitive perspective:
Almost all of human history (pre-agriculture) accounts for a small share of human lives (~2% - not even human life-years)

Quoting Ryan Briggs (@ryancbriggs): This was my main takeaway from the seeing cave paintings in the south of France. They’re around 15,000 years old and it was just chilling to think that for over 10,000 years anatomically modern people were basically stuck living nasty, brutish, and short lives.

Bad mini-golf courses use geometry to funnel the balls toward or away from especially good OR bad places for a player’s ball to be…
Thread, continued, 22:03 UTC · 2 likes
so like the worst possible configurations are
1) a cone surrounded by a reservoir that inevitably leads to the hole (so tapping the ball in any direction at all leads to a hole in 1
Thread, continued, 22:04 UTC · 2 likes
2) a very tall cone where you start from the bottom with the hole on top, such that only a perfect, very difficult shot works at all, and when it works it works perfectly (ie can never make the final shot easier with intermediate shots)
Thread, continued, 22:11 UTC · 3 likes
The best possible hole (in this one respect) is a perfectly flat course
The Fundamental Problem of Mini Golf Design is how to distort the courses with obstacles and such such that novelty/aesthetics/variance in difficulty/etc are high while the influence of mere gravity is low

This is a good example of how empiricism goes wrong. Let’s just assume the claim is correct (which I don’t doubt)
You can and should still do mechanistic and systems-level reasoning as a complement to empirical studies, which are hard, expensive, long, and often bad

So like consider the financial cost, lab results, and whether there’s mechanistic or empirical reasons to think it could be actively harmful at some given dose

I mean my prior on there being a trade off is pretty high (or else there has to be a reason smarter is bad all else equal)
Also idk friendships are somewhat selective/zero sum but way less than monog relationships or college admissions

My slightly more nuanced best guess is that genetics is very high dimensional, and there are a few extremely specific paths that get you ~free IQ points and many more that get you costly ones
