(quoting @SheilaBair2013: #SBF was financial illiterate. He thought effective altruism meant he could rip people off, that it was OK to use new investor money to pay the old… Another reason why we need early financial education - to help kids understand money ethics, hopefully preventing future SBF’s.)

Hot take SBF was very financially literate

I mean the FDA does a lot of things, and not literally all of them are bad

It’s true that if the only two options were status quo and FDA poofs out of existence, I think the latter would be better, but I’d be fine and I think positive about an agency that just runs RCTs on drugs

Stefan Schubert (@StefanFSchubert): Good example of how it's viewed as more acceptable to criticise elite groups than the public.

The key group behind most harmful regulations of the market is likely the voters; the general public.

And to a large degree their opposition is rooted in economic illiteracy.

(quoting @AlecStapp: “Milton Friedman used to say that there are two groups of people who don’t like the free market. Intellectuals because they think they can do it better than the market, and businessmen because they don’t like competition.”)

In many cases the elites are elite because they have political power and/or their explicit and socially agreed upon job is to make good policies (in some sense)

Makes more practical and like moral sense to criticize this group

Nathan 🔎 (@NathanpmYoung): @AaronBergman18 Sure but you're gonna have to use your memory in any experiment. What if you are making that up as soon as you see the photos?

Non rock-solid evidence is still evidence

If the reverse were true (no pictures, family disagreed), I think we’d agree that this would be evidence against at least *my* memories’ reliability

For sure, not inherent at all, but there are good theoretical reasons to expect it to check out most of the time and we see it empirically with other classes of drugs (eg high dose amphetamines to prevent sleep and perceived exertion, arguably chemotherapy too)

Captain Pleasure, Andrés Gómez Emilsson (@algekalipso): I think that the Qualia Research Institute will need to spin off a company of brain organoids, but whose explicit and permanent goal is to figure out how to recruit information-sensitive gradients of bliss for computation, and then build a legacy system that locks in place, at the hardware level, the use of positive gradients of valence for compute, and makes it physically impossible to use suffering for computation. This way, information-sensitive gradients of bliss will be encoded in our hardware in a way that is very difficult to overstep, similar to how we're kind of stuck with a lot of legacy hardware and protocols, including internet protocols and the QWERTY keyboard. We've got to do the same for brain organoids. I don't see anybody doing this. There's a big possible ethical disaster approaching us, and there aren't many serious thinkers, ethicists, and doers here.
