Quoting Michael Plant (@MichaelDPlant): I've got a new working paper on measuring happiness. People often worry about whether we can trust the numbers: is your 7/10 the same as mine? Is the difference between 2-3 the same as 7-8? In jargon, this is about cardinality; it's something of the elephant in the room. I get stuck into the weeds and do quite a few new things. Ultimately, I argue the cardinality assumption is pretty reasonable.

Does it matter if they do? For low cost, low risk interventions it’s not obvious that population-level effects matter at all. If it works for 10% of people, makes 10% of people gain weight, and does nothing for 80%, that’s an experiment worth trying (bc weight-gainers can stop)

Dan Elton 🔍 (@moreisdifferent): The past few weeks I've been experimenting with a trancutaneous vagus nerve stimulator (http://vagus.net) which sends DC current pulses through your ear (for whatever reason the vagus nerve has a branch in each ear). You're supposed to use it for 10-20 minutes a day.
I'm mainly trying to see if it will help me sleep better. I do notice some transient calming effects when using it sometimes, but otherwise I can't really tell if its doing much. It's pretty interesting though! An inplanted vagus nerve stimulator is FDA approved for treatment-resistant depression.
I've also ordered the Pulsetto device which stimulates the vagus nerve branches in the neck. Bryan Johnson uses the Pulsetto if he wakes up in the middle of the night and he claims it helps him get back to sleep. Bryan Johnson also uses an ear-clip type vagus nerve stimulator daily for longevity purposes.
This is a podcast with someone who is very bullish about tVNS:
"Douglas Bremner: Treating PTSD with Vagus Nerve Stimulation" https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/douglas-bremner-treating-ptsd-with-vagus-nerve/id1504335042?i=1000537631199There are also anecdotal reports tVNS can be useful for #LongCOVID and a pilot underpowered RCT on it suggesting it might be helpful: "A pilot randomized controlled trial of supervised, at-home, self-administered transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) to manage long COVID symptoms"

Isaac King 🔎 (@IsaacKing314): Neglect of probability is a cognitive bias that causes people to oversimplify things into mental categories of "will happen" or "won't happen" rather than properly consider the actual chance that they'll happen. A quote from the Wikipedia page:
"we respond to the expected magnitude of an event...but not to its likelihood."
Separately, there's been research into how punishment motivates people. The consensus seems to be that people pay more attention to the chance of being caught than to what the punishment actually entails. A quote from one of the research papers:
"This evidence suggests that increased certainty of punishment provides a much more effective deterrent than increased severity"
These two findings seem contradictory. What's the explanation?
Skin in the game? It seems pretty clear that people do not behave as though probabilities are 0 or 1 (ppl wear seatbelts, for example)
