New Tulsa?
Quoting Massimo (@Rainmaker1973): The town of Whittier, Alaska, is known for having nearly the entire population living in a single apartment building.
The building is called Begich Towers, a 14-story apartment complex that houses about 90% of the town's residents (total: 272). This has earned Whittier the nickname of a "town under one roof".
The building, originally constructed as an army barracks, now serves as a cozy condominium featuring a post office, general store, police station, laundromat, health clinic, mayor's office, and a heated indoor pool.
Whittier, Alaska is accessible only by air or through a single-lane tunnel that stretches over two miles through neighboring Maynard Mountain. The town's weather conditions can be harsh during winter, making the Begich Towers a convenient and practical living solution for the residents.
In addition to the Begich Towers, there is a second condo building in the town where the remaining residents live. The town's school and gym are located in a separate structure but are connected to the Begich Towers by a tunnel, allowing for easy access during the winter months.

“Expected 2nd+ order effects cancel out bc chaos etc” is thrown around too readily, but it really does seem like a good place to start and in some cases probably basically checks out though
Like it seems to me there are two basic ways of “doing EA” …

2) find exceptionally large first order effects that don’t seem to have systematically negative nth order effects

Cate Hall 🔸 (@catehall): I'd like to better understand people's positions on doxing. An example from @TheZvi that's representative of what I've seen: "Do not dox people even if that person is advocating for policies you believe are likely to kill you, kill everyone you love and wipe out all Earth-originating value in the universe in the name of their thermodynamic God."
I don't understand this position. I'd rather live in a world where people can say things anonymously, for the most part. I'd also like to live in a world where people can't advocate on a vast scale for replacement of humans by machines while avoiding any accountability. Why does this issue inspire absolutism in reasonable people, rather than a circumstance-specific analysis, like defamation under the law?
FWIW I have been doxed in a situation that caused quite a lot of harm, sustained over several years, so I don't think I'm confused about the consequences.
I basically agree with Zvi. There are a whole host of arguments for liberalism that confront the “what about really bad positions” question.
To me the main point is that there is no view from nowhere - the e/accs could say the same thing about EA and doxxing an anon ea account…

tl;dr – the new Mamba architecture marks the end of the Transformers Era and the beginning of a new Mixture of Architectures Era, with profound impact
Over 2.5 hours (link below), I cover this from every angle, including:
- core aspects of human cognition that Transformers effectively mimic
- Transformers' critical weakness that invites something new
- why RAG is not enough to power long-lived AI assistants, companions, etc
- an introduction to State Space Models, and the prospect of integrated, long-term memory for AI systems
- how the new Mamba architecture works, from conceptual motivation to hardware-aware algorithm design, including the roles of different memory types (SRAM vs HBM) on modern GPUs
- overview of results and analysis of why simple head-to-head comparisons of Mamba vs Transformers are powerful proof points but miss the big picture implications
- likely elaboration of this architecture, including "multi-state models" and integration of SSMs with Transformers, as already previewed by the new StripedHyena model, Block-State Transformers paper, and more
- the new long-context training datasets we will need to create to make the most of these models, which will look more like onboarding & training a new employee vs compiling discrete tasks
- how this naturally leads to more coherent, predictable, legible, appropriate behavior from AI agents
- implications for future generations of hardware, application development including AI assistants and friends, AI safety research, and even the prospect of AI consciousness and moral worth
- why all this latent potential, combined with recent results in AI-powered scientific exploration, suggest the beginning of a genuine intelligence explosion
Buckle up!!

Arthur Wrong 🔸 (@arthur_wright_): @AaronBergman18 @Laura_k_Duffy but then the actual arguments are what really matters, no?
Historically speaking, the case for God has probably many more great minds in support than AI doomerism. And to think that our beloved EAs could not fall pray to groupthink and motivated reasoning is silly
At some point yes
I’m just not smart enough and don’t have enough time to literally evaluate every argument ever made, so have to use proxies (does this person seem earnest, smart and thoughtful?), and processes/institutions (eg science, prediction markets)

And further, this is the case for literally everyone (every human at least)

Hmm to be kinda pedantic, the ground level thing is the state of the world and laws of physics, not the arguments. The arguments are a level on top of that

Arthur Wrong 🔸 (@arthur_wright_): @JMannhart @AaronBergman18 @Laura_k_Duffy First off, the alignment framing takes for granted that doom is certain if alignment is not possible.
2nd, I want to know who these idealized agents with no cognitive biases are who are investigating AI alignment “epistemically,” as opposed to how people reason about God.
1) no it doesn’t?
2) there are no idealized agents. I’m trying to evaluate how good groups of people are at reasoning and my current belief is that the EA/rationality/alignment communities are much, much better than the God-existence-debate community
