Incorrect opinion
Reply, 17:41 UTC · 1 like
A couple reasons…
Most fundamentally, the missing category is “nutrition” (or ‘nutrient profile’ if u prefer)
Humans (and other animals) regulate nutrient intake in large part via intuition and preferences that manifest consciously (eg “I really feel like a steak”)…
Thread, continued, 17:44 UTC · 1 like
At a very short timescale, before your brain has figured out what nutrients to associate with eg a plant based burger, yes taste is the only proxy it has access to
…
Thread, continued, 17:46 UTC · 2 likes
But over a medium timescale, it will stop associating the taste of beef (even perfectly emulated) with the nutrient profile of cow flesh, and so will not instantiate a preference for beef-tasting things like it used to (or ‘would’)
Thread, continued, 17:50 UTC · 2 likes
Maybe most importantly, over a longer timescale of at least a few years, I strongly suspect that most vegan recidivism is fundamentally caused by a similar process going on wrt beliefs/policies/behavioral patterns rather than individual meals
Reply, 17:53 UTC
And all this^ depends on a premise (which I think is true) that animal flesh provides humans a very important nutrient profile that we (1) don’t know how to and (2) couldn’t afford to replicate with plants/fungi/whatever
Reply to @SpacedOutMatt, 18:03 UTC · 1 like
Matt 🔸 (@SpacedOutMatt): @AaronBergman18 @metakuna Very skeptical of your suggested pathway (plant based meats have poor nutritional profile -> consumers don't crave them in the same way as animal meats) because like 75% of the average American's diet is highly engineered craveable foods with poor nutritional profiles
And yet Americans don’t have widespread arbitrary clinical micronutrient deficiencies!
“Craveable” is endogenous here - there is a reason almost nobody eats exclusively donuts, skittles, and Doritos (or whatever literally tastes the best)

A couple levels to answer this
The highest one is just like “idk whatever I am doing when I write the words “I am 25 years old’ [I am not 25] ”
Probably the best level is like:
You have the long ass algebra expression. Many facts about the world are embedded in it, somehow…
Thread, continued, 02:21 UTC · 4 likes
At some level these facts and concepts (which I should have added above) are exclusively about language, but included here are things like “if some text is a person asking about the weather right now, and previously there is some text saying that it’s raining,
Thread, continued, 02:22 UTC · 3 likes
The dialogue is likely to be completed with a person saying “it’s raining” unless it is also in the text above that the answered is a compulsive liar, in which case they will say it’s not raining”
Thread, continued, 02:28 UTC · 3 likes
Anyway, long story short, this results in some subpart of the algebra equation in perentheses evaluating to some figure which is like “probability that the next tokens are going to be claiming some things that a person described as ‘a liar’ are more likely to say …
Thread, continued, 02:34 UTC · 2 likes
^ this is during training
And then if ur using the LLM, this same probability subsystem is higher or lower depending on the input/context window tokens
So “know” cashes out as this subsystem being high
There’s more to be said here but 6 tweets or however are enough rn lol

connie (in her suncat era 🥰☀️ | need compute? DM) (@lishiyori): Had this convo with a friend last night - why is it that SF seems to have such a high proportion of asexuals? like not even just natural asexual ppl, but it feels like settling into this city makes at least some of us more asexual (cue jokes about the lack of rizz etc)
I have a (VERY) mild theory that it's actually not "lack" but the other way around - it's bc the cup runneth full in other ways. I think it's easier to drink your fill on philia here (companionate love, intellectual camaraderie) and mania (obsessive love with something outside oneself). While the burner/psychonaut side have agape. So there's less of a gaping need for ludus + eros, and that's what we think of as romantic relationships
tldr; finding a lot of homies makes you chase less tail. but also note it's very bellbar where a bunch of ppl here are SUPER horny so maybe it's just some epigenetic effect where "being around lots of other head ppl" turns up or down diff groups 😂
I think there’s a >5% chance I’d be in SF rn if I was ace. Gender ratio is a top 3 reason for not moving there (can be first, second, or third depending on mood lol)

Carrie Radomski (@Submetallic): I disagree that lack of "willpower" is the cause of obesity. "Willpower" has no explanatory power because people's level of "Willpower" has not changed in the past 30 years. The over-eating leading to obesity is probably caused by pleasure or reward-seeking behavior. There is some kind of reward-hacking in our system that has gone awry. Food might've become more rewarding in the past 30 years, not our "Willpower" level going down in past 30 years. Avoidance of suffering (hunger) seems kind of implausible at the levels of calorie-intake we are talking about. It must be more related to seeking reward (pleasure). Seeking reward is not morally wrong and the language around willpower implies that it is some kind of moral behavior when it is not.
Agree on the main point but disagree that hunger is implausible. That’s the primary mechanism by which weight is regulated at all
Anecdote but still: at one point I pretty quickly shot up from 145 to 160 (this made me overweight but not obese tbc)

Ok, I agree that first sentence is literally true
I don’t think it is anywhere near a good enough reason to restrict access to a thing. For example, normal non-continuous glucose monitors are totally legal for consumer purchase and that seems fine
