Evidently, the expectation in elite schools is that a full course load should make sure you still have time for a part-time consulting project, protests, and the extra-curricular goals students have. It seems @Princeton doesn't do that - yet.

PSA to all non-rationalist ppl that see this (and this is totally sincere, not trying to mock anyone): numeric probabilities don’t imply that they were derived via any sort of rigorous methodology

Maybe in some parts of society they do, and people refuse to put numbers on things otherwise, but elsewhere that’s not the case

Like if someone (credibly) told you “Guess the temperature in Moscow rn (no phone etc); I’ll give you $10k iff you’re within 1 degree,” you’d probably try to give your actual best guess despite not living there or having any special expertise.

Andrew Kerr (@AndrewKerrNC): NEW: Your tax dollars are paying for AOC's luxury DC apartment thanks to a new House rule Democrats quietly passed late last year.
Over 200 members of Congress -- 113 Democrats and 104 Republicans -- have billed taxpayers this year for their DC rent under the new program. This comes as a record number of Americans struggle to keep a roof over their own heads amid persistent inflation.
Representatives make $174,000 a year -- well over twice the median household income.
Taxpayers are also financing daily meal expenses for members of Congress under this new program. Matt Gaetz came in first -- he's billed taxpayers on average $1,250 a month to pay for his meals.
This is unironically totally fine and good, and we should be paying them more

Some bad, wrong critiques of this are making the rounds, but I think there are good true critiques
First, my interpretation of this line is that two income households are at least partially a coordination failure - people neither like it nor can individually opt out

Ofc this doesn’t directly contradict the claim being made (higher wages explain rise of 2 income households), but it definitely puts it in a different light

Further, at least some of the gains in real output are going to be captured by rent seekers (everyone bidding up the cost of housing which goes to landlords for one)
Thread, continued, 04:39 UTC · 2 likes
Second, even assuming that “all else equal, higher wages increase two income household share in the US”, is true (which I believe), terms like “account for” can only be reasonably applied to describe a change over time or delta between groups, not a level as is implied here

Thread, continued, 04:39 UTC · 4 likes
Third, afaict this whole analysis ignores the changing nonmaterial “wage” of being a homemaker

But utilitarianism is a claim about states of the world and their underlying moral value, not *directly* a claim that the moral world is adequately modeled by the set of real numbers, standard arithmetic, and comparison operators [<, >,= ]

It's philosophically inconvenient.
I'm not sure we actually disagree. I don't think limited choice and boundaries are necessarily bad/wrong. I do think irl (at least among people I encounter) those things are set without respect for the kid's literal current happiness/distress

Reply to @Andercot, 05:55 UTC · 3 likes
Andrew Côté (@Andercot): My Highest Likelihood Explanation on Altman's Departure:
Erosion of senior leadership experience on the OpenAI Board of Directors created a situation where factionalism over the proposed use of a recent breakthrough led to a political takeover.
Over the last few years, board of directors at OpenAI lost a lot of its senior oversight due to conflicts of interest - Elon Musk, Reid Hoffman, Will Hurd. The only person left with significant leadership experience is Adam D'Angelo.
After Will Hurd left, it was a split vote, 3v3:
The likely factions were Ilya, Sam, Greg vs Adam, Tasha, Helen.
Firing Sam was politics.
It was not over performance, strategic leadership, or vision for the company. Rather, there was contention over the use of a breakthrough that drove a vote between safetyism and deployment speed.
Why this was Factionalism - Sudden Ousting
If this was planned, Sam would not be representing OpenAI at APEC events all week, OpenAI DevDay two weeks ago. If Microsoft knew or was involved, Satya Nadella would not have been on-stage with Sam at Dev Day.Microsoft claims they didn't have advance knowledge of this - they claim they knew about it one minute in advance. There clearly was not internal alignment on this decision either - @gdb just quit over this.
What was the wedge issue? Just recently at APEC Sam announced he had witnessed the frontier of knowledge being pushed back four times in his experience at OpenAI, and the last time was recently - a couple weeks ago.
Likely Greg and Sam wanted to build and deploy it in earnest, and Ilya didn't. Ilya had become lead of the "Superintelligence Alignment" division earlier this year. I would bet Ilya was the vote that broke the stalemate and led to the departure.
Sam was kicked out over concerns he would move AI forward too fast by deploying a recent breakthrough.
It's unlikely departure was related to anything regarding operations, cash burn, partnership-making ability, and so forth - OpenAI has blank-check status for ability to raise, they have huge cashflow, only a few hundred staff, are beyond doubt.
Most importantly, the suddenness of the departure, lack of communication to Microsoft, and resignation of Greg Brockman all point to this being a sudden move by a board faction.
Likely, the board felt that OpenAI was completely setup - in partnerships, funding, team, and direction, they could afford to push Sam out to regain control of of the direction and pace of roll-out of AI tools without threatening the security of OpenAI.
Whatever the proximate justification behind the lack of being 'candid' - this is likely ultimately a split between safetyism and acceleration.
Explanations that should be discarded
Sam is extremely successful and intelligent, but also has a bulletproof reputation as an upstanding, intentional and pro-social person. He's also a billionaire several times over. The language used in the OpenAI disclosure, as well as comments by Eric Schmidt, seem to all point that this was a disagreement over intentions behind the use of AI tools, rather than an over-reach of power, monetary conflict of interest, or a personal scandal.
First time I’m using this phrase without a hint of sarcasm: big if true

Emmett Shear (@eshear): Today I got a call inviting me to consider a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: to become the interim CEO of @OpenAI. After consulting with my family and reflecting on it for just a few hours, I accepted. I had recently resigned from my role as CEO of Twitch due to the birth of my now 9 month old son. Spending time with him has been every bit as rewarding as I thought it would be, and I was happily avoiding full time employment. I took this job because I believe that OpenAI is one of the most important companies currently in existence. When the board shared the situation and asked me to take the role, I did not make the decision lightly. Ultimately I felt that I had a duty to help if I could.
I have spent today drinking from the firehose as much as possible, speaking with the board, a small number of major partners, and listening to employees. Our partnership with Microsoft remains strong, and my priority in the coming weeks will be to make sure we continue to serve all our customers well. OpenAI employees are extremely impressive, as you might have guessed, and mission-driven in the extreme. And it’s clear that the process and communications around Sam’s removal has been handled very badly, which has seriously damaged our trust.
I have a three point plan for the next 30 days:
- Hire an independent investigator to dig into the entire process leading up to this point and generate a full report.
- Continue to speak to as many of our employees, partners, investors, and customers as possible, take good notes, and share the key takeaways.
- Reform the management and leadership team in light of recent departures into an effective force to drive results for our customers.Depending on the results everything we learn from these, I will drive changes in the organization — up to and including pushing strongly for significant governance changes if necessary. I will be rolling these out as they become clear over the 30 day period. OpenAI’s stability and success are too important to allow turmoil to disrupt them like this. I will endeavor to address the key concerns as well, although in many cases I believe it may take longer than a month to achieve true progress.
I have nothing but respect for what Sam and the entire OpenAI team have built. It’s not just an incredible research project and software product, but an incredible company. I’m here because I know that, and I want to do everything in my power to protect it and grow it further.
It's now 1am and I'll pick this up tomorrow.
PS: I am posting this here both because I think it’s in the general public interest to know in this case, but please don’t expect all future internal comms to come through a public channel.
PPS: Before I took the job, I checked on the reasoning behind the change. The board did *not* remove Sam over any specific disagreement on safety, their reasoning was completely different from that. I'm not crazy enough to take this job without board support for commercializing our awesome models.

Kareem Carr, Ph.D. (@kareem_carr): If companies are mostly using AI to do a very mediocre version of something they could have paid a person to do, then the primary contribution of the AI is just saving folks money.
The "transformative innovation" in that scenario is the equivalent of getting a discount coupon.
Even if it were true that reducing costs had only first order effects and AI was mostly used to reduce costs, this would be wrong because even a small % of use being innovation is enough to jump start exponential feedback

Are u sure they want a free visit per se, rather than being ok with an upfront flat assessment fee?
Like the thing they might be averse to is basically saying “yes come and fix my problem and then bill me whatever that costs” bc that could be like any amount of money
