Max Alexander (@absurdlymax): On an abstract level what do you think the reasons for disagreeing with someone's assessment of how best to donate $100 would be?
Two I can think of:
1)Their model of the world is off (this thing doesn't do what you expect it to)
2)Cause prioritization is different
Actually different fundamental values, superficially different values, private/illegible information of either party, “priors” whatever that means, most people don’t actually think in terms of “where is the best place I can donate”?, degree of deference to others incl implicitly

Of all the reasons to hurt a kid, doing it to instill understanding of a fundamentally abstract notion about the mechanisms of *state* law enforcement seems pretty weak
And corporal punishment is fundamentally different than using force to *stop* a crime

Max Alexander (@absurdlymax): @freed_dfilan @ilex_ulmus Yeah but I think kid often is used to refer to people not under 18 (original tweet in point) but child would not be used this way, which I guess we could just used 'immature adult' though this has connotations I think are worse

No I don’t think it does: as a toy counterexample, suppose I think every state of the world in which I’m out of Diet Coke rn is worse than every state of the world where I’m not
Then you can just express u(world) as a piecewise function…
Thread, continued, 14:25 UTC · 2 likes
that gets arbitrarily close to 1 from the left if no Diet Coke but as the rest of the world gets better (eg u(utopia but no DC)=.99999)) and arbitrarily close to 1 from the right if I have DC but the rest of the world gets worse (eg u(misery + DC)=1.0001)
Thread, continued, 14:27 UTC · 2 likes
The fundamental thing here is that utility functions as used in econ and stats are ~always ordinal, and there are ways to express infinitely strong preferences/values as *ordinally* beating everything else without straying from the real numbers
Reply to @JMannhart, 14:32 UTC · 4 likes
Jonathan Mannhart 🔎 (@JMannhart): Isn't it the exact other way around?
Microwaves excite water molecules, of which proportionally more are in the food. So the food gets proportionally more of the energy.
I assume this can be true with some exotic plate materials, but for most ceramics microwaves work great?
The plate can still get hot from conduction (I think that’s the right term lol) from the heated water
But the meme is still wrong lol
Reply to @prerat, 14:35 UTC · 2 likes
prerat (@prerat): @AaronBergman18 @summer_of_bliss i dont think it works to just order them like that, because that utility function still implies you will trade dietcoke-utility probabilistically
I mean it literally works in some sense, if you’re defining a utility function to be an ordinal mapping between states of the world and some real number (and I think this is generally the definition, no?)
Like I can do whatever I want - it’s my utility function

However, in a 2009 interview with Charlie Rose and Ronald Reagan's Secretary of State George Shultz, Gorbachev disclosed a surprising revelation. He shared that during their walk, Reagan had asked him straightforwardly if they could put aside their differences in the event of an alien invasion threatening the world.

From the episode (and this accords with everything else I know) funding is the main constraint and they’re rejecting good applications bc of limited money

No huge/systematic change over time (assuming this year's grants will be made and added) except that it became a thing in 2016 apparently (the data goes back to 2012). Animal welfare has been about 10% of OP giving since then

Here’s my actual best guess understanding that I’m sure is at least partially wrong (for SSRIs specifically):
- sustained increase in serotonin does ~nothing directly but causes a bunch of epigenetic changes downstream that we don’t understand mechanistically
Thread, continued, 15:30 UTC · 5 likes
- at a non-mechanistic explanatory level, the direction of this effect might (weasel word ik) have something to do with sustained increase in serotonin coding for (ie correlating with evolutionarily(?)) a low stress/everything is fine environment (including internal environment)
Thread, continued, 15:30 UTC · 5 likes
- also something about neurosteroids. They seem good. If you started taking SSRIs and ~immediately felt better this was probably the mechanism
- something about BDNF, maybe, but it kinda seems like every time you poke the brain (metaphorically) in any way BDNF goes ⬆️ so idk
Thread, continued, 15:30 UTC · 5 likes
- at a high level, it seems like the broad qualitative effect of SSRIs is to decrease the negative emotional salience. This often correlates or causes depression but isn’t identical to it, and it’s a reason they don’t always work for anhedonic type depression

Thanks to the talking sand, I now understand how the talking gets inside the sand (unless the sand is making things up)
It’s called an EEPROM programmer, and it is a *hardware* thing that writes the thing that loads the OS aka software *physically* onto *another* metal thing

Quoting Aaron Bergman 🔍 (@AaronBergman18): @metakuna @bat1441 Ngl this is why computers seem like magic to me. Like at what point do u get hardware aka metal that can be said to have software running on it? Idk if software is even like a legit category (a ~natural abstraction~ one might say)

GE Lion (@gelionexists): @AaronBergman18 @metakuna @bat1441 BIOS is on this chip on your computer's motherboard, which is loaded in by the manufacturer.
Great minds think alike
