cat from /dev/null (@cat_fro_devnull): As you type those things what’s your probability that you make a typo? I usually make several typos each week and don’t write a billion things per week. Seems like a similar argument can be made for whatever medium you would represent such a belief in.
To generalize, I bet there’s some upper limit below 1 that no ideal Bayesian would have a as a probability for any proposition for any number of reasons: typo, hallucination, whatever. I’d guess something like 99.99%

MacAskill’s argument seems most reliant on the claim or theory that agents acting in their self-interest+more altruism than sadism leads to the asymmetry. I agree in some sense, but think there are countervailing considerations he doesn’t address well, the most obvious being
Thread, continued, 15:49 UTC · 5 likes
The very repugnant conclusion.
But more generally, this theory seems not so much “wrong” as extremely under-theorized relative to how much intellectual work it’s doing.
Also to annoyingly self-cite, I argue for a sort of moral asymmetry here https://www.aaronbergman.net/p/my-case-for-suffering-leaning-ethics

Followers? Impressions on key tweets? Big accounts influenced? Collaborations made?
Don’t think there’s a single one, but one I was thinking about recently was (likes)^a/impressions, where a is probably like 1, 1.5, or 2.
Because you want to incentivize both getting seen and being liked given that you’ve been seen

Cold take about the cold inspired by the cold weather🥶❄️⛄️
Reliable access to a place that’s dry and about room temperature is definitely one of the best parts of modernity, extremely underrated

I think there are good evo-psych reasons for this but also, like, try going camping in the cold and rain! It fucking sucks, and the suckiness increases monotonically with time

Yeah agreed, I should clarify I think there’s >0 hedonic adaptation for just about everything, though wouldn’t be surprised if it was closer to 40% or 90% for cold in particular
Also, probably showing how spoiled I am but wtf is a bush camp and what we’re you doing there?

Would a Google Doc survive nuclear war?
No, really, how many individual locations would need to be destroyed for the information stored in an arbitrary Doc, or YT video, or website, or anything stored online to functionally stop existing?

I honestly have no idea what the answer is. I’d be surprised if it’s 1, but basically any other number up to like 1000 seems totally plausible, including that everything exists on a satellite or something like that

- caffeine tolerance resets pretty well after 1-3 days off. If you don’t need it, advised once in a while. Warning: may suck
- IMO a reasonable dosing schedule is 100mg/1 cup 60-90 mins after waking, then half that amount ~4 hours later. Maybe cut all this in half to start idk

Thread, continued, 04:35 UTC · 2 likes
And this was *despite* … knowing that…
1) “smells like weed” was a thing people said, even (presumably) without currently smelling it, so they must have thought it was distinct (no one says “smells like plastic”)
Thread, continued, 04:35 UTC · 2 likes
2) I knew what weed was, when and where people tended to smoke it, etc, so my prior on detecting the scent varied according to setting (like “walking past a group of guys on a city block hanging out and smoking” vs “supervising 9 year olds at an outdoor summer camp”)
Thread, continued, 04:35 UTC · 2 likes
3) I was actively curious about the smell! Like (swear to God lol) I remember actively trying to ascertain the scent (w/o actually smoking) while in various settings of elevated P(weed nearby)
