Ooh I’ve facilitated a few EA intro fellowships and am pretty sure I’m on the disagreeable/contrarian end of the spectrum. One think I think works well is explicitly telling everyone that respectfully playing devils advocate and the like (while noting that’s what you’re doing)…

And be the change you want to see! If someone makes a point that seems confused or mistaken, explain why you disagree (respectfully and politely obv)

It’s not at all clear to me why we should intrinsically value biodiversity

Joseph Everett (WIL) (@JEverettLearned): #eatgoodfat
When picking your fats to eat, you want to avoid polyunsaturated fats (in orange) All fats do have *some* PUFA, that’s natural, you just want to minimize it. Saturated fat is the most oxidation resistant fatty acid, and monounsaturated comes next.

@5f31c0@mastodon.social (@5f31c0): So, my problem is, all three of these seem like they have to be true, but only two can be true at the same time:
1. Qualia is real, and not reducible to computation
2. The universe is purely computational
3. Qualia must have causal efficacy to qualia reports

I’d guess 3 is wrong. Qualia more likely the “intrinsic” side of causally-efficacious processes, but the qualia themselves need not have any causal power.

Amanda Askell (@AmandaAskell): I sometimes worry that the world’s best minds are hooked on what are essentially glorified crossword puzzles, since the interestingness of problems scales with features not very correlated with their importance. If there’s not a term for such problems, maybe “intelligence traps”?

Captain Pleasure, Andrés Gómez Emilsson (@algekalipso): Latest attempt at recreating a rose's scent from scratch.

N7 is a descent "rose character impact without flavor" accord.

4 Phenylethylalcohol
4 Fructone
1 Citronellol
3 Floralol
2 Geranyl Acetate
1 Peonile
1 Zenolide
48 Ethanol

N9 works as a sweet rose with apple nuances 🌹🍏

Joshua Teperowski Monrad (@jtmonrad): For @FHIOxford, I had 2 tests & an interview, didn’t receive feedback on either. (Successful app)

For @open_phil, I had 2 tests & 3 interviews, received some verbal feedback on my overall candidacy (unsuccessful app). Btw, they compensated $ for tests.

OpenPhil ‘rejected after multiple work samples and interviews’ gang…all of us should team up and form a B team called TranslucentPhil

EA Lifestyles (@EAheadlines): @AaronBergman18 @jtmonrad @FHIOxford @open_phil Aaron did you get any feedback?

Not on the work samples above and beyond getting invited back after the first and rejected after the second. Pay was nice though
