The Frisc (@TheFrisc): brings up the organized retail thefts that have gotten so much attention. As early as next week he says he'll introduce a proposal to "formalize a permitting process" to disrupt street sales of potentially stolen items.

Pretty funny (to me anyway lol) that the authors of one of the most influential development papers of all time, @DrDaronAcemoglu @baselinescene & James Robinson, have no idea which of 111 observations mysteriously vanished in their paper.

Context: microeconometrics course final project is replication of existing paper + extension, and I may try to somehow combine this one with Nunn + Wantchekon's "The Slave Trade and the Origins of Mistrust in Africa"

How influential is "The colonial origins of comparative development"?
It has over 15,000 citations, it's own Wikipedia page, and enough response papers to fill a course syllabus.

More important than leaving out a lone data point, though, is the fact that full data and code to re-create results are public online! Social science would be in a much better place if this was a norm in every field! Not that it's universal in economics.

Aella (@Aella_Girl): I wish plastic surgery for men was more normalized! Most men never think at all about cosmetic procedures as an option, but you can just go *make your jawline stronger* if you want to. I feel like there's relatively low hanging fruit for strong quality of life increases.
Basically zero sum, though

Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇸🇺🇦🇹🇼 (@Noahpinion): The Environmental Kuznets Curve strikes again!
Growth, not degrowth, is the key to rewilding our world.
(quoting @MaxCRoser: The 'Living Planet Index' measures how the populations of the world's wild animals change over time. Globally the Index shows a large decline in the last 50 years. Broken down by income of the country, the Index shows an increase of wildlife in the high-income countries.)
Wild animals probably suffer a ton and this is bad

Not podcast episode, but one that you listen to every time it comes out?

Mark Horowitz @markhoro.bsky.social (@markhoro): A classic RCT gem from Janssen for their 7th negative trial of esketamine on the trot : "implementing measures to minimize placebo response are warranted." Great captains generally say "the goalposts were too narrow - hand me a saw".
Esketamine is just shitty ketamine. For gods sake, they could have at least chosen the better of *TWO* isomers to pretend is a special new drug.

IMO big difference between “eat things with traces of milk powder” and “guzzle caged eggs every meal”

Yeah but it’s an *accurate* virtue signal. Mask wearing (indoors, with others, etc.) is indeed virtuous!
