Carlotta 1.0 (@PeacefulAutism): @AmandaAskell Is this the correct contrapositive? If one is against the killing of animals (ex: vegans), one should be against abortion.
I don’t think so, since IRL the main issue with animal farming is suffering, not killing or death per se.

Hmm, I consider myself an EA and am low on both agreeableness and anxiety. Seems many EAs are disagreeable in a local interpersonal sense (i.e. don’t mind breaking norms, being contrarian) even though we care really care about the well-being of others.

Effective Altruism Georgetown will be interviewing @robertwiblin for our inaugural podcast episode this Friday! What should we ask him?

Jeremiah Johnson 🌐 (@JeremiahDJohns): Hot take? Poetry has completely and utterly been surpassed as an art form, and 'Barren' is an appropriate name for a poetry mag.
Liking poetry is like enjoying wooden figurines - sure, fine... but it's weird, no one cares and other art forms have objectively passed you by.
(quoting @FCardamenis: Danielle Rose lost her job as Poetry Editor over this tweet. Complete BS. Totally outrageous.)
Surpassed by what? Think I disagree with this

Divia Eden 🔍 (@diviacaroline): 45. If you tune in to it, the constant invalidation of children can be deafening.
“You don’t want that!” (He does.)
“You’re okay!” (She isn’t.)
“That doesn’t matter.” (It does to the kid.)Etc.

David R. MacIver (@DRMacIver): I feel like asking "Why?" is usually a category error. Most of the time stuff just happens.
Interesting thought but I don’t think this is correct. What is an example of something that “just happens” without explanation?

Aella (@Aella_Girl): is the news covering her cause she's white, or is it cause she was attractive and had a vlog with a huge amount of material that makes it easy to humanize her?
Those things are probably causally related

Amanda Askell (@AmandaAskell): Why not try to make the effective altruism movement as large as possible? One concern might be "idea dilution": as you get bigger, you need to appeal to more people so you weaken the claims. Yet it feels like EA ideas have actually become more concentrated as the movement grows.
My experience organizing EA Georgetown: there are a ton of very smart, EA-aligned ppl at good but not Ivy universities who have never heard of EA, and who would be extremely receptive without dumbing down/diluting the ideas
