Idea (not necessarily endorsement): institution where by default anyone can do anything legal with their own money (ie the status quo) but there’s some sort of process/political body whereby a supermajority or other high-bar algorithm can veto high-level spending plans

(but can’t compel spending)

I actually don’t think that concerns about ultrawealthy spending (including things that might be called “philanthropy”) are mostly moot irl but not conceptually/ideologically/ethically insane

Like you want the ability for someone somewhere to “just do things” instead of dealing with the full sclerotic nature of democratic politics

But it feels like there should be something between “property rights therefore I can make almost any species go extinct if I can afford it” and “you need massive poly-lateral political buy-in for anyone to do anything good”

I agree with the morally-tinged point being made here but also from a purely “how to maximize quality of life” perspective, descriptively, it just seems straightforwardly rational to move money from buying utility via housing to buying utility via any normal good or service

> **Quoting Aakash Gupta (@aakashgupta):** Run the math on the lunch and it falls apart in about ten seconds.
>
> A $28 lunch every working day is roughly $7,000 a year. That is the entire prize for never eating out again.
>
> Now look at what actually moved. The median US home went from $321,500 in 2019 to about $420,300 in 2024. That is nearly $99,000 in five years, close to $20,000 a year. A Gen Z worker who banks every single lunch saves $7,000 while the house they are chasing gets $20,000 more expensive in the same twelve months.
>
> You can do everything Kevin says and still lose ground.
>
> Zoom out and it gets worse. Since 1980 home prices are up 551% and incomes are up 373%. The price-to-income ratio went from 3.65 to over 5. The distance between what a salary buys and what a house costs is the whole story, and no amount of skipped sandwiches closes a gap that compounds faster than anyone can save.
>
> The lunch was never the variable.
>
> The math gets funnier when you check who is giving the lecture. Kevin took just under $15 million to be the face of FTX, put around $9.7 million of it into crypto that went to zero, and held a $1 million stake that also went to zero. The man telling 23-year-olds that lunch is why they stay poor lit more money on fire in one bad bet than most of them will earn in a lifetime.

> Rice has a problem unique among grains. It grows in flooded paddies, sitting in standing water for months, and it draws arsenic out of the soil roughly ten times more eagerly than wheat or barley. That arsenic concentrates in the bran, the grain's outer layer. White rice has the bran polished off. Brown rice keeps it, because the bran is where the fibre and minerals live. It is also, inconveniently, where the arsenic lives.
>
> A 2025 analysis found brown rice carries around 24% more total arsenic and 40% more inorganic arsenic, the form classed as a known human carcinogen, than white. You upgraded to the wholegrain and quietly upgraded your carcinogen dose along with it.
>
> Then the ecology, which nobody ever pins on rice, because rice looks so very innocent. Those flooded paddies are anaerobic, and the microbes thriving in them belch methane on an industrial scale. Rice cultivation produces something like 10% of all human methane emissions and roughly a fifth of agricultural methane. Cattle get filmed for documentaries about their burps. Rice quietly produces a tenth of the world's methane while flooding entire landscapes and hoarding arsenic, then takes its place in the salad bar wearing a wellness halo.
>
> Cows are dragged through the climate courts every week. The rice paddy, doing serious damage of its own, sits in your grain bowl with the expression of something that has never done anything wrong in its life. Curious, isn't it, which foods we decide to interrogate.

40% of the worse kind but yeah I mean I don’t think it’s like a terrible life choice just a modestly dumb one bc it also tastes worse

I guess my only point is that it seems to me worse on the dimension that is the reason people eat it bc it also tastes worse

But maybe rice is bad

Model that at least to me motivates economic progressivism:

Two people, Jim and Tom, have an absolute set of basic needs that cost $1000/mo. They are also immortal and time is unbounded

### [Thread, continued, 23:54 UTC](https://x.com/AaronBergman18/status/2062684546219245639) · 12 likes

Both also have an absolute maximum amount they can work without getting injured such that they’d be worse off over the course of a year because of lower wages from lower productivity, call that 100 hours/mo

### [Thread, continued, 23:54 UTC](https://x.com/AaronBergman18/status/2062684548190613722) · 13 likes

They have also both found the absolute best fit for themselves economically in their current role

But Tom was born with a slight genetic advantage in terms of strength so he makes $11/hour whereas Jim makes $10

### [Thread, continued, 23:54 UTC](https://x.com/AaronBergman18/status/2062684550178680864) · 18 likes

Under any nonzero interest rate, if Tom is willing to save even a penny of his surplus dollar, he will be able to retire \*forever\* eventually whereas Jim will be working \*forever\* merely to not die

For one thing, “no thank you” only might get you fired whereas “fuck you” will get you fired

The former stays quiet and you don’t need to deploy wealth to fend off potentially powerful enemies

The former doesn’t get you blacklisted from an entire industry, in general

You also might understand it as a phenomenon that still works when you’re overall less powerful than the thing you’re talking to whereas fuck you money implies that you’re the more powerful one

I disagree, science is a somewhat specific set of norms, practices, and institutions based on intentional analysis of observable phenomena

And science too is often wrong! Even in some idealized version of science where everyone is doing their best, some genuine best guesses will in fact be wrong at least for most of history (ie constrained by technology)

Counterexamples:
\- Cultural evolution generating dietary norms that are codified as beliefs in humans (eg the practice of soaking beans pre-understanding of why)
\- all of philosophy, which at the very least clarifies and narrows the space of possibilities sometimes
\- high liquidity prediction markets
\- arguably logic but this is kind of the least interesting answer

If the former, because we have genuine uncertainty about AI sentience and for the same reasons you care about human suffering

It’s true there might be tradeoffs but for now those are probably massively asymmetric like in the case of factory farming: humans can pay a very small price for potentially massive benefits for other beings

First of all the “once again” phrasing was dunk-y and bad, sorry about that

But more substantively I’m not sure we \*have\* a familiar concept that is adequate for this. For one thing it’s not at all clear how to individuate models even if they have experience (ie im guessing the weights aren’t analogous to the human individual), for another it’s very weird to prefer that a company never make a model (which I assume is implicit here but maybe I’m wrong) than to make one with the commitment to keep serving it indefinitely

It also seems likely that they’re diverting the capacity elsewhere, so it seems plausibly like trading off the existence of rabbit individuals and squirrel individuals where resource constraints just do force a tradeoff

>
> They cannot sweat, yet have nothing to roll around in to cool themselves off. Except their own manure, which (contrary to the common misconception) they are so averse to (thanks to their strong sense of smell) that new sows will often suffer from constipation to avoid soiling the space from which they eat and sleep.

And “social defeat,” lots of it, in every third or fourth stall some completely broken being you know is alive only because she blinks and stares up at you … creatures beyond the power of pity to help or indifference to make more miserable, dead to the world except as heaps of flesh into which the \[insemination\] rod may be stuck once more and more flesh reproduced.”

It's so beautiful that the market converged on essentially the exact same heating/cooling capacity for a standard space heater/AC unit

Standard space heater is 1500W, standard A/C unit is 5k BTU which \*removes\* almost exactly 1500W of thermal energy (1W = 3.41 BTU <=> BTU = 0.29W)

> **wanye (@xwanyex):** One of the things that seems so stupid and infantilizing about modern culture is that you can’t just talk to people like an adult now and reason through things and make the case for this or that and encounter people with agency to do anything about it. There’s nobody at the company to whom you can give a firm handshake and the sales pitch. In its place as a process. You follow the process. And then a decision is made in the background. Everything is like applying to college.
>
> So for example I ordered a water heater and I guess I didn’t notice that there was a separate option to have the guys carry it in for you. I got one of these fancy new heat pump water heaters and it’s much heavier than a normal water heater, which is already pretty bulky and heavy, and I can’t get it downstairs by myself. So I called to see if we can’t get the guys back out here to get it down into the basement. But of course there’s no making that happen. There’s no amount of money I could offer, no sweet talking. You can’t get anybody on the phone who has any agency to make this happen. There’s a process. And what I want is not part of the process.
>
> So instead what we have to do is I’m returning the original water heater and I ordered a new one and this time I checked the box to have the guys carry it into the basement.
>
> So later today, some people will come in a truck to take the original, perfectly fine water heater away. And then later different people will deliver a different water heater and carry it into my basement, because this time I checked the box that says they’re allowed to do that.

To a first approximation, if you can use a single instance of Fable working alongside you to make $45/hour more or about $25/hour more than with Opus 4.8, you should do that

(although presumably the needed $ is much lower in claude code thanks to caching wizardry)

Obviously there is a real correlation and overlap between EA and rationalism, and I identify as both, but I still think EA should be judged on its own terms rather than by proxy

Because of the people who are rat but \*not\* EA, there’s a relatively small group that thinks EA as actually instantiated (if not in principle) is actually bad and a much larger group that just doesn’t care much about others and so of course that’s where you’re going to find lots of anti-social behavior

Wait is this true? Time perception seems pretty functional to me so even non-sentient entities could have a functional analogue of more experience given clock time

Hmm I think being vegan for ethical reasons is highly predictive of other relatively weird positive ethical behaviors like earning to give or kidney donation

But there’s a reason that other things like cheating are encoded biologically or culturally as the intuitive normie definition of morality - they predict functional cooperation and other things that correlate with one’s genes’ and culture’s proliferation

And those things tend to be around coordination, game theory, etc rather than for the benefit of a creature like a farmed chicken who can’t really do much to help me or my family or culture

I’m 52 minutes late!!

I think irl at a normal restaurant beef is probably better

This isn’t intrinsic though, it seems like plausibly shrimp could be better if we treated them a little less horribly. I’m a bit sympathetic to it being bad to kill cows per se but not bad to kill shrimp (ie distinct from suffering)

Also bonus take: wild caught fish could be best of all if we slaughtered them quickly, but irl they asphyxiate or are gutted, in both cases dying quite slowly

I think so but tbc my actual reasoning is like “that’s my default heuristic and I would have heard by now if there was a compelling reason to eat shrimp bc I have a weird number of animal welfare nerd friends”

> **Tyler Menzer (@Tyler_Menzer):** @AaronBergman18 @cljack I know there was a whole big thing about shrimp welfare from tech-y EA, but it honestly always seemed a bit missing the forest for the trees type of deal, and a prime example of the type of problem where you only solve what you can most easily measure (n of animals in this case)

I wouldn't index too hard on the type of guy who shrimposts on twitter. Tbc I haven't personally rigorously audited the research but my strong overall impression is that the foundations here (and in general for things like this) are weirdly strong. I can basically guarantee that @RethinkPriors to name an important player isn't like naively forgetting that some things are harder to measure than others and that this is one of a dozen tricky methodological things to watch out for

There's just a small army of extremely smart people churning out esoteric but load bearing research that informs the funding decisions that pays the shrimp people to do the work that people like me online can champion without understanding the ins and outs. Animal welfare stuff is uniquely hard to be confident in because of the intractability of estimating intensity or presence of subjective experience (and they know this) but conditional on that this isn't like one guy armchair reasoning

Random report from two days ago, I haven't read at all, I'd encourage you to skim some of this stuff and see what you think

Hmm, I think there’s often a tradeoff between two desired properties in a question: (1) what you actually care about (what you call “directness”) and (2) ability to answer confidently and accurately because there’s a specific instantiation of some abstract concept being presented

“Does our love transcend my physical beauty” is what someone might care about but it’s hard to know how to answer (the answer is probably often some flavor of “well kinda”)

The worm thing is a complicated social dance that I don’t have a whole explicitly modeled theory of atm but like “would you love me in some specific situation that when answered literally reveals something important” is at least a way forward

The two styles are complements ofc, not substitutes

I don't actually have a perfectly clear model of this yet, a couple (probably related related) things come to mind:

\- USG can borrow at 4% and you cannot, so you'd like to have the option to borrow $1 and invest in SP500 if you could borrow at that rate. I'm chatting about this with claude to understand rn (framing difference: there's just always the question of whether USG should spend a marginal dollar on X, Y or Z; it's not trivially obvious that borrowing a dollar and investing it is a \*bad\* idea)

\- Collective action/public goods (esp defense) funding: you're not going to create a public good with investment returns (speculative institutions/mechanisms exist for this but they don't seem to be amazing yet) but USG can by taking a dollar from you and your 300M besties

\- intergenerational de-risking

\- lots more I think including the ability to stay solvent in a crisis that I'm not smart enough to immediately grasp well

Someone’s gotta compete with Slutcon on price, man. There’s a lot of money to be made from people “only” wanting to pay say $1500 for this type of thing (yes these are the cheapest tickets. There’s also an $18k one)

“Conference-type things are expensive to host” sure but IIRC EA Global (without dinner catering, RIP FTX) costs like $500/person on avg and ik there are costs to scale but I don’t believe there’s no profit to be made at an 80/20 version at half the cost to attendees

AlreadyRT’d but in all seriousness children are in a literal, non anti-woke way one of the biggest ~literally marginalized and underrepresented groups in basically every major institution or part of society that isn’t explicitly labeled as “for youth”…

Society has made the policy “never include children in anything in any way unless you have a Meta-sized compliance department or overwhelmingly obvious precedent” pretty highly incentivized particularly for the risk averse

But also you can just do things, especially if they’re explicitly legal, even if it’s slightly inconvenient not to

And “letting a 14y/o go to a politics watch party” (or whatever the best term would be) where alcohol is served to other people, with a legal guardian” isn’t exactly the bleeding edge of the edgy youth-rights movement

In fact this is as safe as it gets anywhere to more liberal side of “unconditionally refuse to let a kid do anything except where it is extremely and obviously not in conflict with anything”

So in conclusion we should do woke 3.0 about kids this time. Kalshi is hereby cancelled.

But actually idk just like consider moving a bit in the liberal direction if you ever run something where this kind of situation could arise

> **Mishka (@mishapathy):** Well, there's room for reasonable high-openness people to refuse to be waterboarded, certainly. It's an unusual experience though that's offered in a safe environment, and taking that opportunity might show a high openness to experience.

“Press button to watch a random mother be told that her two children, 7 and 10, have both been killed in an accident but then eventually we’ll reveal that it’s just a prank and a team is standing by to prevent self-harm” is also an unusual experience in a safe environment in the same sense of “safe” as is used here

I guess I’ll bite the bullet and say “yes this does correlate with openness to experience” but it correlates much more strongly with sadism, so what you’re really testing is sadism vs openness relative value revealed preference

Likewise with waterboarding. I resist the word “masochism” bc it means or at least connotes as indicating genuine liking of what is called “pain”. In the waterboarding case it’s just pure suffering, there’s no liking involved (for virtually everyone at least), so you’re testing “how much are people willing to suffer to get a new experience”

I guess if you want to call that openness to experience that’s fine but it would seem to me to indicate much more strongly a behavioral tendency to cause oneself suffering in general than a preference for diverse experiences all else equal

There’s something to the point that if \*elites\* (or politicians etc) only have AC then you get systematic bias toward insufficient action

If everyone gets AC it’s just solving the problem directly

I agree but also like genuinely being on top of not just “how to prompt Claude” but good intuitions around how to use the whole AI ecosystem well is of major value

Harmful in large part bc of massive “transaction” costs associated with moving right? If so then maybe cpi+5 or landlord covers moving costs somehow if they want to raise more

Trump is extraordinarily bad (as we are seeing) and warrants extraordinary countermeasures by civil society. In a consequentialist sense it's just straightforwardly the right call IMO, and I can't actually convince myself that there's some sort of quasi-sacred duty for a company or shareholder to do what they straightforwardly think would be bad relative to the alternative in this context

Tbc 99.8% of the time "conspiracy to delay vaccine rollout" is really really bad, to the point that it seems tempting to wrap all possible scenarios into a single bundle and call them categorically bad, but object level that's not the case

Idk how much of this is actually driving my reasoning but it seems relevant that we as a society don't generally expect pharma companies, or anyone, to maximize currently-live human deaths prevented directly by their drugs.

Maybe we should, but I don't think we should single out actions contrary to the goal because they were motivated by something other than maximizing profit or being a normal company or something like that

Also, behind the veil of ignorance, if I don't know who I'm going to be (even if we restrict that to american citizens), I \*strongly\* prefer the action that prevents Trump (with some true best guess probability) to the one that gets me a vaccine a few weeks earlier. Not close at all

I don’t mean anything specific to like the last few weeks, I mean in general across his second term

Jan 6 pardons and whatever you wanna call the money that’s being disbursed

Unimaginably cynical corruption, no IRS audits

IMO very clearly disbursing favors to his friends and not in a smart politics way, Jensen Huang says a few words and Trump bends the nation to accommodate

Attempting to end birthright citizenship and not via a constitutional process. Ofc it’s so trivially unconstitutional that this hasn’t been the main story but still

Basically sending out loyal thugs to capture people and bring them into an opaque extra-legal world in which court orders can’t reach them bc oops now they’re in El Salvador. I’m mostly against deportation in general but Im trying to get at the fundamental extra-legality of the ICE stuff

DOGE: new world screwworm returns, hundreds of thousands of Africans die, abandoning our own USAID employees in Africa or wherever. One of the worst political institutions in American history

Iran War, little need to elaborate

Killing random people in boats in South America bc maybe they were moving cocaine around

Trying to prosecute Comey and others who have made his life inconvenient. I think extraordinarily egregious and the kind of thing that turns US into Turkey

Making life extremely difficult for legal immigrants and their potential employers, giveaway to China

Failing to restrict chip exports to China - a shocking level of corruption and cronyism to supersede a policy that would fundamentally follow his explicit ideology and rhetoric

What am I missing

There are important discontinuities across the “do any task without any humans in the way” threshold

Fundamentally what’s going on is that capital owners can “close the loop” and just acquire whatever they want that is possible to make, without humans in the economic loop

A toy model is: imagine 10 people on an island, of which one owns all the land and a machine that can create and do arbitrary things without the other 9 - what is your story for how the other 9 get any proportion of the massive absolute amount of wealth?

Retvrn to subsistence farming on land that the wealthy person has ~no use for and so will sell in exchange for a prayer or sex or something he wants from a human per se? Maybe, but that is a very bleak world
