It looks like an engineering problem now. Claude opus + internet + code + best in class robotics and sensors is AGI. This isn’t trivial to put together lol but the point is that

I think it’s like a real but “thin” kind of satiation - wears off quickly and is much weaker than “not even thinking about food”

I have no idea what I’m talking about but it kinda makes sense, like your gut/brain trying to estimate energy consumed is gonna want to know volume

Maybe a dumb question but a “startup” is just distinguished from a normal old new business by vibes right?

### [Thread, continued, 08:35 UTC](https://x.com/AaronBergman18/status/1800084308742513127) · 15 likes

Like the association is with founder ambition and hardware/software innovation (as opposed to like just taking existing systems to a new market)…

but it’s still fundamentally a continuous spectrum, not much of a natural category outside of the social world (???)

Tryna figure out why I never hear about very smart young people trying to do anything in between “work at a job for a paycheck” and “found a business predicated on the potential to be worth at least hundreds of millions”

\- it’s systematically easier to build a company and sell to google for $10M than build a company that you personally value at $10M (ok but shouldn’t people migrate here until the EV equalizes?)

Also like there’s a missing middle in terms of vibes

On one side you’ve got unicorn-esque tech startups. On the other, an ethnic restaurant or dry cleaner eeking out a normal profit

I’m trying to point out that at least conceptually and I think irl (lol) there is plenty of space between owner-operator and “startup”

Like anything regional for one thing (chain restaurant, bank, retail, basically anything but software and maybe pharma)

which is extremely understandable and IMO basically too much of a good thing

But like ex ante it’s totally possible (and I think true, tentatively) that “CCP cannot win AGI race” checks out from an impartial moral perspective

Sweet. Obligatory “idk what I’m talking about”

I’m skeptical for kinda illegible qualitative reasons. Like there is only so much information packed into a model of arbitrary size. You can make that info quality better and denser during training by increasing compute/data

given some fixed model output size (“number of parameters”) but that is different

And the model is \*already\* optimized to like configure itself so as to not need to do search (or else training loss could be lower by a few gradient descent steps). I think - someone can yell at

me if this is misinformed.

But throwing arbitrary thinking time/inference compute at the model doesn’t seem like the kind of thing that scales. Bc it feels like not the meaningful resource constraint. Maybe it gets you half an OOM or something, but that was already gonna happen

Yeah but they’re quite informationally dense by design

FWIW “EA” at large is way closer to the “ignore animals” end of the spectrum than “care a lot about animals”. Animal welfare gets only a small fraction of the money and other resources

I think this is bad unsurprisingly (see https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/btTeBHKGkmRyD5sFK/open-phil-should-allocate-most-neartermist-funding-to-animal?commentId=EiayxnzzyXssfJobJ)

I hope you’re right but no this is the mechanism by which congress can delegate complicated, technical, messy, changes-over-time stuff

This becomes more important the less functional and responsive congress is, and pre-1984 we had a much more functional congress afaik
