Jaime Sevilla (@Jsevillamol): We’ve combined our work to answer this question. In short, the conclusion of previous work is upheld: we expect near-complete AI automation this century. Matthew further explains how a compute-centric view of AI suggests that short (<4 years) timelines of automation are unlikely.
Eyeballing the graph, “unlikely” means ~10% chance

davidad 🎇 (@davidad): alternate universe where @algekalipso is born 70 years earlier: “Almost no chance that digital computers can produce music. ‘Digital music’ advocates don’t understand that what constitutes a musical substrate is a topologically connected manifold of potential harmonic resonances”
(quoting @algekalipso: After thinking a lot more/hearing more arguments, the probability that digital computers can be conscious remains <0.01% upon reflection. It's simply the case that advocates of digital sentience don't understand binding, physicalism, & how to avoid epiphenomenalism all at once.)
I think Emilsson is being way too confident here bc we have no clue what’s going on with consciousness, but consciousness is an entirely different thing than X demonstrable capability

The disanalogy here is that a bunch of really smart people (you, Jacey, Chalmers, …) disagree about the thing being proved unlike in the triangle case. If merely *I* didn’t share your understanding it would be a different story

I respect @50cent as an artist but it seems we have some disagreements about epistemology and the nature of value 🧵
Thread, continued, 17:02 UTC · 5 likes
In his canonical masterpiece Many Men, 50 asserts that positive hedonic states are causally or logically enhanced in magnitude by the existence of negative states

Thread, continued, 17:02 UTC · 5 likes
However, this seems mistaken
Insofar as a relationship exists, it is downstream of psychological representations of the original hedonic states rather than the difference between the states themselves
Thread, continued, 17:02 UTC · 4 likes
Later in the work, 50 claims that differential outcomes between his bullet wound and that of a rival make it “clear” that his existence is the result of teleological—indeed likely divine—intention

Thread, continued, 17:02 UTC · 4 likes
I readily concede that the events described are evidence directionally in favor of such a conclusion
However, there are two countervailing considerations
Thread, continued, 17:02 UTC · 4 likes
First, a localized version of the anthropic principle makes his observation of the reverse situation (in which his bullet wound is fatal) impossible and therefore the observation is much weaker, if any, Bayesian evidence
Thread, continued, 17:02 UTC · 2 likes
Second, a more parsimonious, plausible, and harmonious (with the extant scientific consensus in all physical sciences) explanation is that of mere luck. This alternative too dampens the strength of the evidence discussed
Thread, continued, 17:02 UTC · 7 likes
I look forward to the @50cent’s response and hope in earnest for a fruitful dialogue to resolve such important philosophical disagreements

Seems mostly semantic. Like one person might call “pain” the qualia of a pin prick minus the valence and another person lumps them together but they don’t disagree on anything but the word
And does “resist” mean anything above and beyond “feel negative valence from”?

e.g. if you catch a salmon, you prevent it from killing other animals and it would have died some violent death otherwise not long afterward (I think most salmon don't survive their initial run to their breeding area?)

Hunting seems basically fine
Industrial wild fishing seems really bad bc the fish die by either being gutted alive or asphyxiation, and if I’m recalling right both usually take >20 mins, often >1 hour and sometimes lots more

Peter🧅📈 (@PeterJAngel): @AaronBergman18 @rgblong As someone who's a nihilist but (probably) not an illusionist this seems fine? If consciousness can exist in the absence of morality.
Why not morality without consciousness?
Oh yeah that’s plausible and would be the case if kantianism, or preference utilitarianism, or paperclip utilitarianism we’re true. I just think those things are wrong and (some flavor of) hedonic utilitiarianism is true instead

I’m not opposed to affirmative action, ie insofar as demographics proxy for substantive things not easily expressed/revealed in a college app

In fact my best guess is that black (and probably Hispanic) students should get some nonzero leg up relative to whites and Asians, because being black in America (yes black per se) seems to make ~everything else harder (of course figuring out how much that should be is hard)
Thread, continued, 19:42 UTC · 16 likes
But I also think this principle does *not* imply disadvantaging Asians in particular relative to whites
It doesn’t doesn’t seem true that being Asian *per se* makes one’s college app look better than it would in a world of perfect information flow

“History doesn’t repeat, sometimes it rhymes”
The current situation is shockingly analogous to 20th century Jewish quotas: model minority that excels academically, not considered equal in some fundamental way to “real [white] Americans”

For those who favor anti-Asian AA but are glad Jewish quotas are a thing of the past, I challenge you to find a relevant difference and consider whether the former is just as bad

You can signal “I’m the type of person who meditates” without meditating.
Mostly object level tho, seems like people report intrinsically valuable benefits

Nina (@NinaPanickssery): People report many things.
I think the evidence is poor if compared to basic interventions such as just "relaxing", "taking a moment to do whatever you like", "going for a walk", "having a nap" etc.
Psychology/lifestyle stuff is full of overfitted models.
For sure, I happen to think other better evidence (see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altered_Traits )supports the anecdata, and for less legible reasons it just doesn’t strike me as a vacuous/purely placebo/fad type of thing

It doesn’t even make much sense from a theoretical perspective. Aspartame is literally two common amino acids and alcohol (2L bottle of diet coke has <1% of standard drinks’ worth), and afaic neither aspartic acid nor phenylalanine on their own are considered carcinogenic
